BREAKING: PM to address the nation following new Scottish lockdown
PM Boris Johnson is set to make a televised address to the nation at 8 pm tonight following Scotland’s announcement that it is to go into a new full national lockdown from midnight tonight until the end of January.
It’s believed that Boris will outline further measures to help tackle the rise in COVID-19 cases in England.
A No 10 spokesman said:
The spread of the new variant of Covid-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country.
The prime minister is clear that further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced new restrictions this afternoon and said that the situation in Scotland is ‘extremely serious’ – news which has undoubtedly piled the pressure on Prime Minister, Boris Johnson to do the same in England.
The Scottish stay-at-home rules will mean that from midnight all schools will be shut until February (except for the children of key workers and those that are deemed vulnerable) and those who leave home without a good reason will be promptly issued with fines.
All of mainland Scotland is already in the toughest tier of COVID-19 regulations, but despite everyone’s efforts thus far, Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement follows a ‘rapid increase’ in infections.
