A cow can fart & burp out between 280 to 560 pints of methane into the atmosphere every day. Considering there’s roughly 1.5 billion of them on the planet, that’s a hell of a lot of harmful gas being emitted! In fact, they create more greenhouse gas emissions than planes, trains and automobiles combined. With that in mind, to help win the fight against climate change, researchers are turning to everything from seaweed diets to genetics to try and make Bovines less gassy

One of those leading the fight is an Australian company that’s created an eco-friendly cattle feed which is said to be the “equivalent to taking 100 million cars off the road.”

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)’s affiliate company, Future Feed, has developed an innovative cow feed that uses seaweed to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases the animals emit into the atmosphere! How cool (and a bit gross) is that?!

Speaking about the company’s innovation, Future Feed director Michael Battaglia said:

We know that just a handful [of the product] per animal per day, or 0.2% of their diet can virtually eliminate 99.9% of methane.

Methane is a greenhouse gas that has been proven to be the second-highest contributor to our planet’s warming. Since the Industrial Revolution, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more than doubled, and about 20% of the warming the planet has experienced can be attributed to the gas.
